Block Island Seaweed

A series born from a collaboration between Marta Abbott and the Toronto Ink Company while the artist was in residence on Block Island, R.I., first in 2017 and then again in 2019. This work explores materiality and form through medium and color. Marta used all-natural Toronto Ink Company inks to communicate the intricacies of the seaweed’s structures, lines and shapes, which often echo the movement of water itself. The colors she uses in creating these pieces come from the ground, and so offer the element of earth to balance that of water, and create reference to the crucial and symbiotic relationship between land and sea in places whose borders are formed by shores, like Block Island.
